Slightly before the pandemic, about the summer of 2019, I started a series that intended to look at or capture “crowds” in New York City. Crowds are a kind of bunching of people, like a tour group being led across a square. Or an area can be “crowded,” meaning filled randomly with people from all directions and different intents. NY has a lot of both but especially the later form, and I thought that a wide horizontal frame might capture that sense of crowdedness being everywhere across one’s field of view when you encounter a busy area. Didn’t get to complete the exploration, but now there’s a return to density in the city, I hope to.
Some 16 years later, a look at the line of buildings that is the subject of ”Distant Red Farm,” one of the first images in my San Luis Valley series, here in early Spring when South Park is still raw with winter brown and scattered snow.
