Umbrellas on 42nd Street

Slightly before the pandemic, about the summer of 2019, I started a series that intended to look at or capture “crowds” in New York City. Crowds are a kind of bunching of people, like a tour group being led across a square. Or an area can be “crowded,” meaning filled randomly with people from all directions and different intents. NY has a lot of both but especially the later form, and I thought that a wide horizontal frame might capture that sense of crowdedness being everywhere across one’s field of view when you encounter a busy area. Didn’t get to complete the exploration, but now there’s a return to density in the city, I hope to.
